What to Expect

Bowen sessions usually take between 40 minutes to an hour. The treatments are done with the client on a treatment table, although  depending on the circumstances other options such as seated are possible. Comfort is the priority. This means that people with limited mobility, in a wheelchair or in care settings can also benefit from the therapy.

I prefer unclothed to allow skin contact so I can see the colour of the skin during the treatment but Bowen can also be given through light clothing.  The client will be covered during the treatment.  Personal comfort is important.

A full consultation and assessment will be taken and an appropriate treatment plan made for each individual.

Bowen Therapy can usually be relatively gentle to receive, although some moves maybe a bit uncomfortable when applied.  This may be the case when working over active trigger points.  The clients feedback is important.

Another important aspect of the therapy is that the effects of the session will continue to work for a week up to 10 days afterwards as the body continues its process of realignment. Many clients experience relief from their pre-treatment discomfort.  The relief is sometimes only short term, while for others it is long term.

It’s possible with Bowen that you may only need one treatment and certainly 2 or 3 with a minimum of 7 days between, is often enough if the problem isn’t overly acute or long-standing. It all depends on the individual and their body’s ability to heal. Nothing is forced.

Post treatment clients may experience a range of reactions, varying from feeling sleepy to being very energetic.  Some clients feel burning sensations, while others may feel like they have been run over by a bus.

To get the most out of the treatment, there are a few basic precautions for you to observe during the first 24 hours after the treatment.

  1. It is a good practice to drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated

  2. If you experience any discomfort, drink some water and go for a 10-15 minute gentle walk and drink more water on return.

  3. Avoid sitting for periods longer than 30 minutes at a time for the rest of the day after the treatment.

  4. Avoid having hot baths or showers.  They should only be tepid.

  5. Avoid heavy exercise for several days.

  6. Avoid contact sport for several days.

  7. Avoid lifting heavy objects.  Make sure to keep your back straight if doing any lifting on the day of the treatment.

  8. Gentle exercise such as walking or swimming in moderation is OK.
